FAQs
What is Columbus Day and why is it celebrated?
Columbus Day marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. He was an Italian navigator sailing for Spain. Many Italian-Americans celebrate it as a day of heritage. Britannica notes that the first U.S. celebration took place in New York City in 1792. It became a federal holiday in 1971 and falls on the second Monday of October.
What is a famous quote from Columbus Day?
No single quote defines the day. The best-known line is the children’s rhyme “In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” It is a rhyme and not a quote from Columbus. Many other lines found online are credited to him by mistake, so check the source before you share one.
What to say instead of Columbus Day?
Say Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It honors Native American history and culture. South Dakota has marked Native American Day since 1990. Berkeley, California, became the first U.S. city to adopt Indigenous Peoples’ Day, in 1992. You can also say “Happy long weekend” or “Happy second Monday of October.”
What was Columbus’ famous line?
There is no single proven line. People often link him to “sail on” and “the ocean blue,” but those words come from later stories and poems. Historians use his ship’s log to study his actual words. Read more in Britannica’s biography.
When is Columbus Day 2026?
Columbus Day 2026 is Monday, October 12. It always falls on the second Monday of October.
Is Columbus Day a federal holiday in the USA?
Yes. It is one of the 11 federal holidays, and federal offices close. Banks, schools, and private businesses may follow their own calendars, so check locally.
Conclusion
Whether you celebrate heritage, enjoy the long weekend, or take time to learn, pick the Columbus Day wishes that fit you best. A kind message goes a long way. For more on the holiday’s history, visit Britannica.
